How To Cancel Road Tax And Get A Refund?

,

Did you know that a car road tax (also known as Motor Vehicle License – LKM) registered with JPJ Malaysia can be cancelled and claim a refund for any remaining road tax?

There are still many car owners who are unaware that they can claim a refund for their road tax, particularly if they cancel their tax before it expires. This process is valid and permitted by the Road Transport Department (JPJ).

Why Do You Need to Cancel Road Tax?

Here are the common reasons why vehicle owners choose to cancel their road tax:

  • Selling or transferring vehicle ownership
  • Changing insurance type or company
  • Vehicle No Longer in Use

However, in most cases, road tax cancellation is done when someone wants to sell a vehicle. This is because cancelling the road tax is mandatory to enable the vehicle name change process at JPJ.

📌 Key note: No refund can be given once the road tax has expired, and the refund amount must exceed RM5.

How to Cancel Car Road Tax at JPJ?

In accordance with the latest guidelines provided by JPJ Malaysia, the process for cancelling road tax is as follows:

  1. Provide a copy of your identity card (original/old car owner) and the original grant
  2. Go to the bank to collect the bank statement with the bank officer’s confirmation stamp.
  3. Remove your vehicle’s road tax.
  4. Bring the car road tax, grant, copy of your identity card and bank statement to JPJ.
  5. Fill out the road tax cancellation form
  6. Please inform the officer at the JPJ counter if you wish to request a refund of excess road tax. You need to fill out the JPJ K6 form to request a refund.

How to Get a Refund for a Cancelled Road Tax?

Did you know that you can claim a refund if there is a remaining valid period for your road tax? According to the information from JPJ officers, refunds will be processed within 1 to 3 months after the complete application is received.

Required Documents:

  1. Fill out two copies of Form JPJK6 (Application for LKM Revenue Refund) – available on the JPJ website or at the counter.
  2. Original car road tax
  3. A copy of the vehicle grant
  4. A copy of your identity card
  5. Bank statement with confirmation
  6. Road tax refund payment slip (can be printed from the JPJ MySikap system)

For example, if the road tax price is RM800 per year, and you only use it for one month, the remaining 11 months can be claimed back.

✨Additional Note:

  • In Malaysia, a road tax refund can only be made if the road tax is still valid.
  • You will automatically receive a road tax refund slip when you update the vehicle’s ownership at JPJ.
  • A representative can make refund claims if the original owner is unable to attend.
